VAD Nepal's Volunteers Programs

VAD Nepal currently has volunteer opportunities available through our partner organization in the beautiful country in Nepal. Volunteers have the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational and community aid programs. This will give you a chance to make an important contribution to the people of Nepal and while doing so gain an in depth experience of the country and its culture that will stay with you the rest of your life

Nature of the Program:
There will be three phases during the program. In each phase, the participants will have different activities and experiences designed to make the most of their time in Nepal.

Orientation Phase:
At the beginning of this phase, participants will be given a brief orientation about Nepal in general, interest related topics, and some cultural clues (like the do's and don'ts with their Nepali family). City tours will be arranged including some important places like the main temples, monasteries, Immigration Office, the Post Office, Banks and other facilities in Kathmandu and area to be posted. During this phase participants will be given basic communication skills in spoken Nepali by a professional language trainer. The participants will also stay with a Nepali family to stimulate cross-cultural experiences and to reinforce new language skills. This will be followed by lectures which cover a variety of topics including culture, religion, politics, etc. about Nepal. In this phase the participants will have ample opportunities to learn about Nepal, gaining both theoretical and practical experiences by observing and participating in the family and community. All these activities and experiences will help them to build self confidence and develop the cultural understanding necessary before starting the next phase.

Work Phase:
During this phase the participants will work at their placement site according to their interests and the needs of the host organization. The participants will be under the guidance and supervision of the host organization. Although VAD Nepal will try its best to match the participant's interests with their placement, it could sometimes be different from their expectations. VAD Nepal functions as a mediator between the volunteer and the host organization.

Participating volunteers can work with various organizations of rural women. People with disability and leprosy, sex workers, HIV+, farmers, etc. They can get involved in primary health care, literacy and non-formal education and training, Community Based Rehabilitation, Community and Home Base Care, Prisoners’ Children, Farmers’ Field Schools, Action Camps, Demonstration Plots and so on. Besides, volunteers wanting to have medical experiences will be attached with the hospitals or health posts. Researchers will receive support from VAD Nepal staff plus affiliated with the research institutes. If participants are interested in hands-on-practices they will be provided opportunity to work on construction or in filed activities. Most of these activities are being conducted by VAD Nepal itself.

Since the participants will be working and interacting with different people in a new environment, it will be an excellent opportunity to share their ideas and skills. The participant will learn by working with others to overcome barriers and solve problems. In other words, this is a process of "give and take" in which the participants not only contribute their time and skills but gain a new perspective of the world. This phase can be as frustrating as it is rewarding but it will be a personal experience that is unforgettable!

Village Immersion and/or Excursion Phase:
In this phase VAD Nepal will organize trekking excursions as requested by the participants for which cost will be negotiated.  This is primarily to introduce them to rural areas of Nepal beyond the city. While trekking through the mountains and villages, and living with families the participants will share in the traditional lifestyle of the Nepali people and enjoy the fascinating views of snow-capped peaks, lush green valleys with their flora and fauna. Here the participants will put their language and cultural skills to work in yet another part of Nepal.

Recreational Tour:
This is also voluntary for which participants will have to negotiate for the cost. In this part of the program, VAD Nepal will organize a trip to the south of Nepal for an elephant safari in Chitawan National Park, Pokhara valley or Lumbini. The park is one of Nepal 's largest forest regions with wild life ranging from the wild boar, the rhinoceros and the crocodile to the elusive Royal Bengal Tiger. Pokhara is a scenic beauty with its lakes and snow peaked mountains. Lumbini is Buddha's birth place. Researchers can negotiate for research assistants and other support.

During the stay in Nepal the participants will have tremendous opportunities to explore and discover a unique way of life. They will experience the natural beauty of the kingdom as well as feel the warmth of the smiles of the Nepali people, and will depart with a love of this country.
